For those unfamiliar with the language and terms used in snowscooting, here’s a glossary of terms to help you understand this winter sport:
- Cap: A technique used to manufacture a board by molding a polymer material where the wood part represents only the center of the board
- Carre: Metal part on the lower edge of the board, enabling it to turn while splitting the snow
- Carving / Carver: Defines a style of cornering that allows you to make large curves without skidding, i.e. by leaning as far as possible into the turn
- Head tube: Part of the frame through which the fork steerer tube passes
- FFS: Fédération Francaise de snowscoot (French snowscoot federation)
- Waxing: Action of applying wax to the sole of a board
- Wax: Material used to maintain the base of boards and enhance glide, depending on weather conditions
- Fat: Indicates a wide-winged board of good quality for ungroomed snow and powder
- Flex: Indicates the board’s flex resistance. As a general rule, we speak of soft/supple, medium or hard/dur flexThe level of flex influences the board’s behavior
- Footstrap: a strap attached to either side of the snowscoot’s platform, under which you wedge your feet. It keeps your feet in contact with the board
- Dowel: Hexagon socket headless screw
- Grip: The lower part of the snowscoot, the grip is the system used on the platform/platform to grip the foot.
- Headset: Mechanical system that turns the handlebars using ball bearings
- Carving kit: Set of polyurethane pads placed between the frame and the boards to give a cohesive movement between the assembly and add comfort when carving
- IT: Acronym for the Insane Toys brand
- Nose: Front spatula of the board
- Core: Wooden part that forms the centerpiece of a sandwich board
- Board: Wooden part that forms the centerpiece of a sandwich board
- Runner: Part of the board on which the bindings are located
- Forkpivot: Fork tube that passes through the head tube
- Stem: mechanism that joins the fork to the handlebars
- Radius of curve: Indicates the radius of the circle made by the ski during a cut turn. It’s an important characteristic of the board that indicates its turn behavior.
- A short radius indicates that the ski will have a good entry into the turn but average stability, and vice versa if the radius is large
- Rocker: Name given to the front part of the board that rises up to the flat
- Sandwich: A technique used to manufacture boards by superimposing a base, wood core and fibrous material
- SAS: Quick-attach system for boards, introduced to the market by the JYKK brand
- Sole: The part underneath the board
- Shape: Shape of the board
- Heel / Tail: Rear part of the board
- Tool: folding tool set comprising Allen keys and screwdrivers
